That M on a book

September 8, 2007 by Dmitry

Soviet Union produced some licensed cars, e.g. licensed from Ford (GAZ) and Fiat (Lada). But a lot of car designs were just the “pirate” rip-offs of Western models. Look here (original car on the left, Soviet rip-off on the right):

Soviet Cars

I believe they actually didn’t copy those cars, it’s just a coincidence. Like when two scientists invent something at the same time without knowing about each other efforts. So yeah, the similar design of those cars is just a coincidence.

OK, I’m kidding! These are clones.

So why am I talking about cars and rip-offs?

Look here:

When I was drawing this icon for Mémoires, I thought it would be cool to have “M” on a book. And, since we have a memoir theme here, of course, it must be made of gold. It must have a fancy font. Yeah, this is how cool books should look like.

Two weeks later I saw this Mori icon:

Holy Dolly!

Dolly the sheep

I realized that I’ve seen this icon before. So it turns out, this thing was in my subconscious mind, and when I decided to draw a book with an “M” on it, I reproduced the Mori icon.

Holy Dolly, Sorry, Mori!

I’m going to replace Mémoires icon for a final release with something else. Maybe, with “Mé” on it? Or maybe just add a pen to this icon? A black one… Oh, and a green book instead of a blue one, maybe? Ha-ha :) Your suggestions?

Mémoires – journaling with style for Mac OS X

September 7, 2007 by Dmitry

Journaling is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to accelerate your personal development. By getting your thoughts out of your head and putting them down in writing, you gain insights you’d otherwise never see.  — Steve Pavlina

We are happy to announce the public beta release of Mémoires — our first product for Mac OS X (second, if you count our popular Mahalo widget).

Mémoires is the best way to keep your journal on your Mac. Choose a day and write as many notes as you like. Then browse your journal by day using calendar, or search for notes using the instant-search feature.

Mémoires has a gorgeous user interface. Even though it’s a powerful application, it is very easy to use. No distractions, no complicated forms: just two buttons and one search field. Even easier than a paper journal!

Best of all, it’s free. Download it now, and let us know what you think.
